THE OLD PICKENS POST
THE HISTORIC OLD PICKENS FOUNDATION
QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER: OCTOBER 2017

PRESERVING THE PAST WHILE STRENGTHENING THE FUTURE

Events: HOP participated in the Oconee Passport Program this year, which brought additional visitors to the site. HOP is now listed with Trip Advisor and Google maps.

The Seneca High School Madrigal Choir presented our Spring Concert in May, and the Bluegrass groupr "Wilson Pickins" filmed a music video at the church in August. Both groups appreciated the exceptional acoustics in the church. We were honored to host another beautiful wedding in June.

* Closing in October - Visit the church on Sundays 2:30 - 5:00 pm when docents return in April 2018. The kiosk and cemetery will remain open every day 8am - 8pm.

Improvements: Additional security has been added with a subscription to a fire and intruder alert system, and the information kiosk has a new border of river rocks. The board plans to refresh the information panels by the front doors in the comingmonths.

Planning: The Historic Old Pickens Presbyterian Church and Cemetery, a South Carolina Historic landmark on the National Register of Historic Places, is a treasure representing the history of the Upstate. Since the old cemetery has been closed to opening new plots for burials, we would like to hear your reactions to the proposal below:

The Board of Directors of the Historic Old Pickens Foundation proposes to provide an attractive and appropriate location to lovingly place the ashes for those who choose cremation. The Memory Garden will be placed in a natural setting, planted with flowers and groundcover, and enclosed in an 'old' looking fence border, creating an atmosphere of serenity and natural beauty, in keeping with the dignity of the historic setting. Families may arrange to memorialize the deceased with inscribed pavers or permanent plantings. We wish to offer the community an affordable option for respectful placement of ashes and a memorial in a permanent location.

If you belong to a civic or community group and are looking for a program, please contact us. We can come to where your group meets to share information about Historic Old Pickens. Remember to suggest Historic Old Pickens as a site for a group tour or an intimate wedding.

Your tax-deductible membership also supports maintenance of the cemeteries. Please remember to renew your membership either in the Fall or Spring. You make all the difference. Thank you.
