THE OLD PICKENS POST
THE HISTORIC OLD PICKENS FOUNDATION
QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER: October 2016

PRESERVING THE PAST WHILE STRENGTHENING THE FUTURE

You have made it happen!! The Informational Kiosk is now complete! Along with the Interpretive Display panels in the Kiosk, the "Circle of Friends" plaque recognizing our generous donors who have made lasting dedications to families and loved ones is now mounted in the Kiosk. We are so very grateful for your support and contributions. We hope you will come see how grand it all looks.

The A-Tax grant request did not award funds for the Interpretive Displays, but we were given funds for a security system and night time cameras to help protect the grounds. We are looking forward to adding a picnic table in the coming months with the help of another grant.

The Board of HOPF wishes to express great appreciation and admiration to Joyce Brickett who accomplished so much while serving as a volunteer with HOPF. Joyce has worked tirelessly and energetically; she has served as both vice president and treasurer, raised funds, sponsored activities and events, written the newsletters and A-Tax grants, and has provided strong leadership to reach our goals. Thanks in large part to her efforts, along with your support, the Informational Kiosk was constructed, and the Interpretive Displays are now complete.

Welcome to our new board members, Wayne and Frankie Wheeler. Residents of Pickens County, both are employed in the banking industry; Frankie Chapman Wheeler is a native of Central, SC.

This September, sixteen visitors came from Pisgah Forest Baptist in Brevard for a tour of Historic Old Pickens, and graced Old Pickens Presbyterian Church with a prayer and a hymn. Two weddings are upcoming. Remember to suggest Historic Old Pickens as a site for a small group tour or an intimate wedding.

If you belong to a civic or community group and are looking for a program, please contact us. We are able to come to where your group meets to share information and show a Power Point presentation about Historic Old Pickens.

The next Board meeting will be January 24, 2017.Contact us for information. We would warmly welcome new Board members or volunteer docents.

Your membership supports maintenance of the cemetery (mowing and trimming), and next Spring we will need to pay someone with a tall ladder to wash the windows!

The Board has voted to send only 2 newsletters/year to save postage and printing costs, so you will have only 2 reminders each year about membership support. Please remember to renew your membership either in the Fall or Spring. You make all the difference.
