THE OLD PICKENS POST
THE HISTORIC OLD PICKENS FOUNDATION
QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER: FALL 2013

PRESERVING THE PAST WHILE STRENGTHENING THE FUTURE

It has been three months since the Historic Old Pickens Foundation Board last met but that doesn't mean the members have not been busy. Starting this month, we will continue to meet monthly on the fourth Tuesday at 6:30. The meeting place is in the Keowee Key Event Center. Please join us but call 864-944-5112 so the entrances gate can be noti?ed. March will be the Annual Membership Meeting and we encourage all members to attend as we review 2015 accomplishments and establish goals for 2016.

This newsletter provides an opportunity to express our sincere appreciation to all of our members who made The Informational Kiosk possible. It is almost complete. All that is left are the Interpretive Displays. An Oconee County A-Tax Grant has been submitted to help finance the 3 boards that will be mounted inside the building. Their purpose is to make available the historical documentation to visitors that come to the site when the church is not open. Also mounted inside will be a "Circle of Friends" donation plaque. Many of the donations were made in memory or to honor a loved one. The building will also serve as a serene spot to re?ect on the origins of Old Pickens and a picnic shelter. With the quilt board mounted on the outside, we are now a member of the Upstate Heritage Quilt Trail.

Included in the A-Tax grant application is a request for a security system that will include cameras for night time vision. The vandalism to the church and cemetery that occurred last fall has been fixed but we definitely do not want it to happen again.

"The Gathering of Appalachian Life", an event based at the Hagood Community Center in Pickens, has included HOP as a site to learn about and visit. The program is made up of classes on religion, culture, arts and history. Board member, Martha Parris, will be giving the presentation and travel with the participants to HOP to tour the site.

Plans for a spring event are being made so mark your calendars for Sunday, May 1st (May Day) at 2:30. We will feature The Southern Wesleyan Singers… new talent for HOP events and we are excited. Watch for additional information and please come and help us celebrate spring. Fellowship and refreshments will follow the program.

Don't forget, we now have an informative Power Point Program so if you or your group can not visit the site, we can bring the information to you. We also have a web site: www.oldpickens.org.

For many of "Our Friends of Old Pickens", it is time to renew your annual membership. Please fill out the attached form and send it to…
